Learning Outcome #2

Learning Outcome #2

Learning Outcome: “Be able to integrate their ideas with those of others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources.”

Framing Statement: I feel as through Project #2 effectively demonstrated my ability to integrate my ideas with others by employing techniques such as quotation, analysis, and synthesis. In Project #2 I used Kevin Kelly’s article “Technophilia” in conjunction with “The Empathy Diaries” written by Sherry Turkle to build my argument about how technology is impacting human behavior and potential. The example I have provided below comes from my third body paragraph. I chose to highlight this paragraph as I am proud of the way I put both authors in conversation with one another while also including some of my own personal thoughts. I begin by using a quote from Turkle, properly introducing it with the phrase, “When highlighting why the current generations struggles to engage in real, in-person, conversation and exhibit empathy she explains that…” I then insert a strong quote from Turkle about peoples needs when it comes to receiving intimacy and how this is challenge when we are adapt to living in technological worlds. After quoting Turkle, I take a couple sentences to unpack her quote and include some on my own thoughts by including rhetorical questions such as “Can we blame ourselves?” and “Why would we put in the time and effort to learn and practice these skills when we have a tool at our disposal that allows us to get everything we want without the input of much effort at all?”. From there, using the foundation laid out by the Barclay model, I enter Kelly into the conversation by means of quotation. Before inserting his quote, I begin to put Kelly and Turkle in conversation with one another by adding the sentence, “Despite his love for his relationship with the web, Kelly doesn’t fully disregard this perspective of the internet degenerating human intelligence.” I then include a strong introductory phrase and state his quote. Immediately after that, I directly put the two authors in conversation with one another using phrases such as “Although Kelly and Turkle may not perfectly align…” and “…they both comment on…” Finally, I finish this body paragraph by including my own personal analysis, using what the authors said and the synthesis of their arguments to overall strengthen my own claim.
